Our thoughts are turning to winter knits for 2024/25 and knitted cardigans are everywhere at the moment. Why? The answer is pretty simple really, they make great layering pieces at any time of year and never go out of fashion!
This winter, cardigan knitwear is all about warmth and style, with a focus on cosy textures, retro patterns, and versatile layering options. Here are the top cardigan trends making waves this season.
Chunky or cabled cardigans
Look: Oversized and plush, with thick cable knits or textured braids.
Styling: These pair beautifully with leggings or jeans, adding a layer of warmth and a cosy look.
Colours: Earthy tones like taupe, cream, or forest green are popular, but bold shades like rust or mustard add a pop of colour.
Cabled cardigans
Look: Hits at or just above the waist, often with fitted silhouettes.
Styling: Perfect for layering over high-waisted jeans or skirts, giving a flattering, structured shape.
Colours: Pastels like lavender and blush, as well as timeless neutrals, are trending.
Patterned and Printed cardigans
Look: Vintage-inspired prints, from fair isle and Nordic patterns to floral or geometric designs.
Styling: These stand out as statement pieces, working well with solid pants or skirts to balance the look.
Colours: Traditional winter colours—navy, red, and cream—but also playful colour-blocking in unexpected combos.
Longline and maxi cardigans
Look: Knee-length or longer, offering a more dramatic silhouette.
Styling: Excellent for layering over basics like turtlenecks, leggings, or even dresses. Belted styles give added structure.
Colours: Neutral shades for versatility, though some are embracing plaids or ombre effects for visual interest.
Open style Cardigans
Look: Sleek, streamlined, without buttons or closures.
Styling: These create a minimalist look, and are easy to throw over any outfit. Great with layered necklaces or scarves for added texture.
Colours: Monochrome shades like charcoal, ivory, and navy for a refined look.
Mohair or soft cardigans
Look: Soft, slightly fluffy textures for a retro feel.
Styling: These look elegant when worn over slip dresses or paired with tailored trousers.
Colours: Jewel tones like emerald and ruby, or soft pastels, complement the fabric’s delicate look.
